Every day, roughly 99,000 new songs land on streaming platforms. Most of them will never be heard.
When attention is the real scarcity
It’s rarely about quality. Songs vanish because there are simply too many of them. About 99,000 tracks are uploaded every day, piling onto a catalog that already runs past 200 million.
Hazel Savage, a former VP at SoundCloud, reckons 45% of uploaded music is never played at all. Distribution used to be the hard part. Now anyone can publish, so the bottleneck has moved to the one thing that can’t scale: a listener’s attention.
The numbers bear it out. Around 95% of artists on Spotify have fewer than 1,000 monthly listeners. The distance between being available and being heard has never been wider.
We live in the first era where almost anyone can release a song. Music has never been this easy to publish, or this easy to lose in the crowd. For most artists, the real fight starts after they hit upload.
